About Films For Change

Films For Change is a dynamic and influential educational events enterprise, and a community of conscious people who support the diverse voices and free expression of independent film makers and celebrate the power of documentary to improve our understanding of the world.

Our events serve as stimuli for learning and discussion, and an opportunity to support story tellers who are striving to shine a light on the  most urgent and important issues of today.

Films For Change brings you valuable information that you may not find in mainstream cinemas, tv, netflix or other sources.

Documentary storytelling can have powerful results for positive change in our society. Films about real issues can provide profound educational experiences, ignite conversations and spark policy changes like few other mediums can.

Some examples:

Blackfish (2013) led to a 84% collapse in profit, the company lost more than half of its market value on Wall Street and its former CEO was forced out, and attendance has dropped every year since the films’ release.

Super Size Me (2004) led to McDonald’s removing the “Super Size” option at all locations, began posting nutrition information for its food and began including healthier alternatives on their menus, less than six weeks after the film’s release.

The Cove (2009) led to the number of dolphins captured nationwide dropping from 23,000 in 2009 to less than 6000 in 2015.

The Invisible War (2012) led to a policy change in the way these crimes are investigated, before the documentary was even released. After its debut, one of the generals featured in the film was replaced, senators like Kirsten Gillibrand proposed even more radical policy changes, and the Pentagon introduced to new programs to “change the culture” surrounding rape allegations.

Of course, the true impact of documentary films is immesurable. There is a ‘ripple effect’ of education and awarenss building where new ideas, and important information can swiftly become widespread and generally known by many people through the process of education.

Films For Change is Australias’ leading documentary screening society, with multiple events in Sydney and Melbourne every week, including many free events, and occasional events in other citites and towns around Australia.

Apart from our enjoyable, illuminating, inspiring and/or informative ticketed and free events which build community and provide profound education, we are also campaigning for law change on issues, for exampla with our campaign to ban single use plastic in New South Wales and Victoria, which we are working on with a strong public education program and regular petitions.

We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children’s future”.
